Health-status insurance and becoming uninsurable – a review

As I noted recently, health-status insurance could be a free-market solution to making sure you’ll have medical insurance when you need it, even if you get sick.  Ronald Bailey provides a good review of John Cochrane’s policy analysis here at Reason.com.

If the market is left free, I think health-status insurance will evolve into a cradle-to-grave idea. For all we know, someone could offer Health-status insurance to young couples, insuring their prospective future children against the impact of certain health problems.

People get upset about the notion of genetic screening, and other type of screening being used to decide insurance premiums. In fact, such screening may be the best way to tackle the problem. Cradle to grave health-status insurance can make sure this is not as problem for those who plan long-term.

Thank you for sharing. Cochran writes about insuring unborn children (health status insurance) in his policy report.

I’d be careful about saying “if the market is left free,” as this implies that it currently is free, which of course it is not. I know what you mean, but may think there is a free market in health care.
