Congress & gov’t employees would be exempt from new insurance mandates

Quoting Donald Boudreaux
: “Lies.  Special privileges. Par for the course.”

From the Wall Street Journal:

Last September Sen. Barack Obama promised that under his health-care proposal “you’ll be able to get the same kind of coverage that members of Congress give themselves.” On Monday, President Obama repeated that promise in a speech to the American Medical Association. It’s not true.

The president is barnstorming the nation, urging swift approval of legislation that is taking shape in Congress. This legislation — the Affordable Health Choices Act that’s being drafted by Sen. Edward Kennedy’s staff and the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee — will push Americans into stingy insurance plans with tight, HMO-style controls. It specifically exempts members of Congress (along with federal employees; the exemptions are in section 3116).

Members of Congress “enjoy the widest selection of health plans in the country,” according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. They “can choose from among consumer-driven and high deductible plans that offer catastrophic risk protection with higher deductibles, health saving/reimbursable accounts and lower premiums, or fee-for-service (FFS) plans, and their preferred provider organizations (PPO), or health maintenance organizations (HMO).” These choices would be nice for all of us, but they’re not in the offing. Instead, if you don’t enroll in a “qualified” health plan and submit proof of enrollment to the federal government, you’ll be tracked down and fined (sections 3101 and 6055).

For a health plan to count as “qualified,” it has to meet all the restrictions listed in the legislation and whatever criteria the Secretary of Health and Human Services imposes after the bill becomes law. You may think you’re in a “qualified” plan, but the language suggests that only plans with managed-care controls such as the “medical home” will meet the definition.

If you want to fix things in this country start with mandating that congress has to be on the same plans. Want to fix social security? Put congress on social security. As long as congress keeps voting themselves raises and voting to be exempt from normal policy, we’re all screwed.

    I agree the House,Senate,All
Gov’t employees,Union employees and for sure Oboma
should have join his Health Care. That would be a bjg savings.Cut the elected officals retirement
    to Social Security. We would
    not need term limits!

  • Elizabeth Garcia

This is just another step to wipe out the middle class in America. It also would resolve the problem of all the baby boomers getting ready to retire with no social security available to them. If we can’t get the healthcare we need we won’t live as long therefore won’t be eligible for social security. If you are a true American you will help put a stop to this sham.

Make the politicans pay for the health care system out of their salaries. If they are truly in office to help the people, and not fatten their own wallets, than they should be happy to do so, as well as being on the same health care plan and paying social security. It’s time to “show & tell!”

Stop rewarding corruption.Take away pensions of those holding office in our Congress, state and local office. If convicted of a felony or misdeamnor – no pension. If one does not pay taxes they cannot hold office. If one acts inappropriately while holding public office – no protection or pension. That simple act could get this country out of debt. Just why should our gov. and unions be exempt from this “so called” great health care plan. Senior citizens be wary. It’s not free folks.

I don’t feel like an american anymore. We are not being treated as equals. I look at my 85 & 89 year old parents struggling, they are in the age group that our goverment borrowed on their SS, so they get less and this year no cost of living. My father is a WWII veteren and all they do is worry about Dr. Bill, and Meds, now food, ins, electric, We should run EVERYONE out of our senate and congress and not ever let them set foot there again, take their benefits away ie Insurance, perscriptions, retirement all. Put them on the streets, and make them live in the real world.I am so sick of our goverment and how corrupt it has become. To me they are the same as any other felon that should be in jail. Heaven help us all.

So if this wonderful plan that they want to force on the United States is going to be the best thing that ever happened, why should Congress the ones that are writing it being exempt from it. Does anyone else feel offended when Obama stands in front of an American flag to give his speeches or whatever he calls them? Just use a white wall as a background, dude. Or would that offend him?

Also, this is the PERFECT time to learn how to eat right and take care of yourself so you’re not in the position to NEED this health care plan. Unfortunately, your doctors do not know (for the most part. I’m sure there are a few good apples out there) about nutrition and how to keep their patients healthy. They just know how to get out that prescription pad and write. Sure, they have to know which one to give, but as Dr Oz says, it’s about 30% guessing. If you go to your doctor and you are sick, do you want the doctor to be 70% sure he is giving you the right prescription? Ask Michael Jackson that same question now and see…Heart disease, diabetes, most cancers, these are the major illnesses we suffer and do you know most of them are either preventable or REVERSABLE with an optimal diet? I will propose to you that it is more conservative to open someone up with a knife than to actually “radically” change their diet. Less billing hours for the doctor, less drugs sold by Big Pharma, healthier America. Think about it, folks!

I cannot find a section 3116 in the health care plan. Was this statement just made up?

Brian replies: I found it in the Senate version.

Washington and many American citizens have clearly forgotten that the citizens of this great nation are in charge. Public officials are our employees! WE ARE IN CHARGE!!!!

We will not allow elected officials to act as though they are above us. After all, they dont have a job without us!

Lets stand together and take back the power. We must demand that they all perform appropriately.

If they dont like it -
If they fail to perform -
If they cant act in a timely manner -
If they cant put the people first -

    WE SHOW THEM THE DOOR!

Mr. Obama and members of congress,

The citizens of this great nation demand that as you work to establish a new health plan, please note that it MUST include any and all public officials. This includes the President of the United States and all members of congress.

If you find this task too difficult or if you are unwilling to comply kindly let us know and we will gladly find you a replacement.

    Thank you,

Citizens of the United States of America

*please also note… should you decide to leave your current position or if you are asked to step down due to failure to meet performance standards, the citizens of the United States will NOT pay for your plane ticket home.

This bill will pass and it will be implemented into law, but after a few years it will collaspe and there will be a strong public outcry against it and it will be repealed.

Its going to devistate the health care industry and fail at its objective.

If it’s good enough for me it should be good enough for them. Getting really tired of being the only one suffering here.

I have founded a non-partisan startup group that wants Congress to stop passing laws that exempt themselves and undo those laws that currently do. It is just getting off the ground but not to worry it will grow.
